About the Field

A perfusionist is a highly trained medical professional who is responsible for operating the cardiopulmonary bypass machinery used during cardiac surgery and other surgeries that require cardiopulmonary bypass to maintain the patient's physiological status. This machinery is responsible for temporarily performing the job of the heart by artificially supporting a patient's circulatory or respiratory function during a surgery. The role of a perfusionist involves understanding a patient's medical history, monitoring a patient's vital signs and choosing the proper medical equipment and techniques to maintain normal blood flow, body temperature and other respiratory functions throughout the surgery.
